In the attempt to find many ways to explain things to students I have returned to Disneyland.

Many teachers talk about opening the chest…I always come back to Aziza talking about opening the eyes in your chest.

Today I explained that it's the way your shoulders relax back and your chest lifts slightly (and your chin tilts up a smidge) and you take  that short, happy intake of breath when something surprises you or overwhelms you in a good way. So I made my students stand in front of the mirror while I said, in my crazy Japanese. "You're a kid..and you're at DISNEYLAND!" "It's your 8th birthday party! YAY!" and made my students take that happy intake of breath and feel it.

And then…while we practiced I would occasional yell "DISNEYLAND! KEEP DISNEY IN YOUR CHEST!"
