Tonight's show with Yael Zarca was…amazing. It really was a fucking fantabulous line-up representing at bellydancers from five different countries (France, Korea, Singapore, Japan and, well, I'm American) and I will write about it later.

But, moments before I went on for my second performance I got something under my contact. I wear hard lenses, it's pollen season, and I am not unfamiliar with hospital trips for corneal abbrasions. There was nothing I could do. No one near me in the waiting pen who could delay anything, the music was due to start before my entrance,  my hair was up so I couldn't hide the fact that one eye was watering and turning red, and no safe place I could put a hard lens if I popped it out and danced with only one in…which I have done in the past.

So, yes, I just clung to the fact that I was gonna do some emotional and tough Turkish Roma and hoped people thought it was all part of me being emotional. It seemed like a better option to look overly moved than to look like I was experiencing physical pain.

So, yeah, as I went on stage I did some "wiping the tears off my face and flicking them away" gestures to start with. And for the first two minutes or so occasionally had to do it again and look up dramatically and let the tears coming from one eye wash down my sinuses.

The show…it must go on.
