Busy day.

Went to work.
Set up for a Japanese guest lecturer who came to speak to 100+ teachers about communication style teaching...he spoke for 2 hours and I could have kissed him we were SOOO much on the same page.
Went directly home after work to shower because I was going to be going into Tokyo.
Got a call from Istanbul (the restaurant)...I haven't had time to audition during an afternoon (come in, restaurant closed, do a song sort of thing) but they needed someone that night and I haven't danced there in 4 years...sure!
Never mind that I was slated to meet TWO random faces from my Anime past who have no connection to each other (Widya And Tony Shumashaks)
Grabed music, packed costume, on train.
Widya came to see me dance, it went very well. Owner gave me his bother's contact info in Turkey in case I have any emergency. He  wants me on the schedule when I get back. Talked with Widya for 10 minutes. RAAAN to get a train to meet up with Tony and his 5 year old son.
(by now it was 9:20)
Went with Tony and son for okonomiyaki.
Headed home, unpacked, removed make-up, ate some sorbet (pear) showered, posted.

Istanbul: The restaurant

In celebration of last-night's last minute gig at Istanbul, Shinjuku...I present entries from the first time I danced at a restaurant, for a month as a sub. It was 4 years ago, at Istanbul, Shinjuku. Two entries and one set of pictures. Much has changed.

"Nope, it ain’t a 9/8th rhythm, I don’t know shit about Turkish dance."

Lats night I mentioned I'd danced there before, but didn't really have to worry about them actually remembering me. The owner last night (a Turkish man and not the tiny Japanese woman I always dealt with) told me "You look like Henna! Are you a sister?" when I first came in last night. Nope, we've just got that American attitude.

Chainsaw manicure

Sometimes I long for brutal machines.

When I have severe sinus congestions and the neti-pot barely makes a difference, I imagine using something similar to a water pick attached to a household vacuum cleaner. It’s a do-it-yourself mental creation that would no doubt collapse my sinus cavity and do irreparable harm if real.

Last night, trying to fall asleep, I became aware of the thick mess of petrified skin on the soles of my feet. My feet hurt. I wear dance sandals when I perform, but when I practice I don’t…and not all my shoes are practical.

I kept imagining two flexible sanding disks mounted at the foot of my bed. As I lay awake I imagined them reaching forward and blasting the layers of dead skin they found.

This would also be a terrible idea.

On Rawness.

Everything runs across my face. I feel the silly grin spread as I look at the exposed neck of a beautiful young man on the train. My eyebrows knit as I remember pain. My face will be well-lined. I never play poker. I’m all tells. It is my emotional weather report.

I think it’s become even more pronounced over my years in Japan. Stripped of my eloquence and verbal power, I show more than I can tell. I communicate more with my face and vocal inflection then I used to, because I must.

I think about this because people on Bhuz are talking about “Rawness in dance” and I want to explore my feelings about being a raw dancer.
