First, congrats to all my homies with new MAMAs (Madison Area Music Awards)…Homie Father with The Spare Time Bluegrass Band and Homiez Null Device.

In Performance News:
Friday night’s performance wasn’t the best.

First small issue was my costume. I am having doubts about my white Disco Bella. It has always fit a little funny and the bra fringe hangs in a way that seems to obscure my waistline. If shortening the skirt (which I tend to catch with my toes) doesn’t do the trick in making it more danceable then I think I’ll be selling it. The front skirt panel is stitched AND snapped to the belt, and I kept worrying that with each wrong step I’m going to have a half unsnapped skirt that hangs funny.

If it is time to sell I will have to sell on Bhuz, because while the hips and waist are relatively small/my size, I’ve had to super pad the bra and it still seems large, which means most dancers here are not going to be potential buyers.

I know I go on and on about costumes, but for the sort of dance I do they are a huge part of presentation…and you know by now I have some fashion and fabric fetishes. I am also a terrible pusher. Mika now has a Bhuz account and has been browsing the Swap Meet…I am also keeping an eye out for anything in her size range that is happy and orange….I still keep looking at that brown costume on Ebay, now down to 250$., and that’s a steal...but it’s not so stunning that I want to deal with miss “can you arrange for someone to pick it up and send it to Japan?”

I have finally made the smart transition to wearing dance sandals when at the restaurant. I bought a pair on divarenee’s recommendation after a very mucky gig last year in a wet underground parking complex filled with drugged/tripping hobbit-like Japanese. I haven’t been practicing in them because my primary practice space has tatami floors that require bare feet. About 3 weeks into the gig at Anatolia I did two shows in a row, one at Anatolia and one (very well tipping) one at the owner’s friend’s nearby restaurant. That night I pulled a chuck of skin off my toes in a turn and couldn’t tell what I’d done until I got home (Ow…but glass in toe? no skin on toe? blister?) because of how filthy my feet were. I haven’t had any transition problems, aside from the one night I didn’t tie them tight enough and eventually had to bend down and remove them or run the risk of breaking my neck in a turn.

It’s nice not to have black feet after a show. At the most recent Tribal Fusion Night I was hanging out with local DJ Martin, we like to snark together. We were talking about something and he reminded me that, much like dancers know the secrets of DJs, DJs know the secrets of dancers. I wasn’t sure if I was going to get gossip or a general secret.

“You all look beautiful out there, but after you dance…you’re really pretty dirty, sweaty and smelly”
“Yeah. Another reason to wear sandals. It’s hard for me to seduce with tar black feet. I can’t always get away with ‘wanna bathe me?’”
“Yeah, I hate to tell you but…you’re no Mary Magdalene.”

Martin also asked me when I am going start being the Meat Girl at Anatolia.
“You know, the spinning sign. One side a lovely dancer, one side a rack of meat.”

I do need to get around to printing out my photos for the restaurant. I’d just burn a copy for Erol, but I know he’ll print them out on crapppppy papper if I don’t do it myself.

The restaurant show on Friday wasn’t horrible, but it was off. Because of a late party I was stalled for 20 minutes. I would have argued it, the white Bella is heavy enough that you don’t want to spend too much extra time in it, but I wasn’t sure if a friend of mine was going to be able to make the show or not (turned out not) so I waited.

The crowd was mostly a party of Americans, complete with a couple eyebrow raised females determined not to enjoy a “sexy dancing girl”…I got one up to dance and she was better afterwards. There was a table with two Japanese women who really loved it all and got that “OMG, thank you! WOW!” look when I got them up to dance, so that helped.

I really shouldn’t have led with a fast 9/8 on zills. I can zill various 9/8 patterns, but I need to drill the speed some more with basic steps.

Still not loving my drum solos, but dug up some old drum solo music I love.

Because of all this, on Sunday I did some earlier than usual prep. I have an all new music set, a clean slate of sorts (I know the music will make me, and the cook staff, very happy: Selim Sesler, Candan Erçetin, Omar Faruk Tekbilek, Richard Hagopian…) and I’ve moved the drum solo up one song so that I have more raw energy when I get to it. I have already picked next week’s costume (I purchased a used blue silk skirt from Henna who is cleaning house before going back to Portland for a bit. It works with my dark blue tribaret…I found a blue combo that works on my skin!), veil, and accessories and packed them all already. I’ll have time during the week to work on my weak spots from last week (drum solo, more veil trick drilling, various 9/8 zill patterns)

Then I went and took an hour of Jazz Dance followed by an hour of Zumba. Tonight will be a night of letting my body rest/heal after 3 days of dance/dance classes and resting up for my first day back in the classroom. I’ll only have 2 classes tomorrow, but I have to show up to work 30 minutes earlier than normal (but, out by 4pm!)
