I haven't done coffee or a meal with Hiro in a long time due to Amazon.co.jp sucking the life-force from him. We've texted occasionally, but when he has been free I've had school festivals and acupuncture. A few weeks ago he popped up on Mixi (like facebook/Myspace for Japan) and posted a few times, but Amazon pulled him back. We never did get to see Transformers on the big screen as planned.

Today I'm at my On Paper school. Usually I walk 40 minutes to get here ( my bike has a flat I haven't gotten around to fixing) but sometimes I take the train. Today, still all sniffles and sick, took the train. Now, it's not a straight one train trip, getting to this shcool means making a v-shaped route of two trains. I change lines at Kashiwa, stopping at the Starbucks before boarding my second train.

This morning I saw a familiar pair of ears sitting in the front window of the 'Bucks. Mr. Puppy waving hello. I figured it was only a matter of time before we crossed paths unexpectedly, but I thought it would be on Kashiwa's "Howdy Blvd" as I walked home from hot yoga and he walked home from the station, I occasionally bumped into him and his snowboarding pals that way in the past.

Seeing Puppy is always good, but not overwhelmingly so. I don't get that flutter in my chest that seeing some ex's inspires in me, nor that fog of awkwardness that must be traversed that others bring. It's the comfort of a friend, but not one you'd take (again) as a lover. We did as much catching up as one can do in 10 minutes, sharing our overly sweet complementary shots of Creme Brule Coffee Stuff and chasing it with the good dark drink.

Who knows when we'll have time to hang out, eat, or go to a movie. I still owe him a walnut/beet/mango salad, because our smooth break-up involved a few promises...that salad being one of them.

We followed up goodbyes with some brief text messages. Puppy now has his own Wonder Woman cellphone wallpaper.

Not a bad way to start the day. I don't often get to run into familiar faces in my neighborhood, when I do it makes Japan feel that much more like home.
