Zills and such
Dec. 13th, 2008 09:05 amI'm really excited about breathing normally again. Learning more about the "coughing variant" of asthma has been fun, ya know, but I have places to dance at...and dancers to see.
I didn't mention last week's show at Anatolia. It was a really good crowd. A friendly drunk Turkish man got people up to dance, there were many happy tables. Next to my changing space was a new space blocked off for a seeing eye dog. One of the patrons was blind, with a few sighted friends and a few somewhere in between. The owner wanted me to go on earlier, so I rushed, only to be delayed to my usual 8:30 time.
You know what I thought when I realized we had blind patrons? Not "What will they enjoy about it?" because I'd imagine a place with foreign food and music and people have fun is pretty enjoyable, but "Well, if there are any patrons who'll be able to pick up shoddy zill work...it is them!"
I've been working on my zills. I've been revisiting old instructional dvd's and using them....but layering zills over everything while I drill or learn....and I zill on my way to the train. I never thought zills would be such friends to me.
As I said, it was a really good crowd. I'm not great with the veil, but they ooooooohed and clapped at simple veil tricks and loved the veil. They thought I was cute.
In the dance-along one of the sighted ladies called me over to the table so the blind men could feel the zills and understand how they were played.
All good.
What's my dance schedule like for the rest of the year?
12/12 8:00~ Anatolia. The owner called me last night to ask if I could start half an hour early, no problem. Then, hearing my voice, he worried a lot. If I can get in, out, and to sleep early I will be happy. I am hoping that my slower set and the rush of performing will open my lungs. I am also hoping that the restaurant isn't full of smokers.
12/13 Go see Anaan perform at Tribal Fusion Night
12/14 If my body is ok, go to Mishaal's end of the year show (this year is just group choreos and teachers...the solo day will take place next year)
12/19 Anatolia.
12/20 Substitute teach for Anaan and Joe's "Tribal basics". Yeah, I know, not I'm not tribal. She wants me to teach them the basics of the 9/8 and a few steps to open up their music world.
12/21 Legend (probably a end of the year party, as they don't usually have dancers on Sundays)
12/26 Anatolia.
12/27 Legend. The hula hoopers may be coming. Daniel, a fellow participant of the "Chiba Wisconsin Sister City Program" (the program I first came to Japan with) is back in the country. I don't think I've seen him in 5 years. He's a caustic Wisconsinite, so we get on fine. He may come up to Tokyo and go with a few friends to see me and then crash at my place. We've talked on the phone about pooling the folks we know in this area together so we can cook, drink beer, and celebrate the holidays.
And rest.
