I looked into tickets for Seattle in midAugust.

uuuuuuuhhhh. Over 2,000$

I talked with the Milkman's Sister about my schedule. I may wait until the first few weeks of September when the prices drop. Usually I'd have to be in school, but that's "Sports festival" so there will be no English.

This means that I will sweat my brains out in city hall in August...but city hall doesn't take off for Obon festival, so I won't have to use my leave for those days!

This means that I will be somewhat stir crazy by September, but I am hoping that the few days I'll have in Kyoto with [profile] divareneein the start of August will help take the edge off.

In minutia:

Starting this weekend my eyes will hate me for a while. My astigmatism is strong enough that daily disposables can't hold my prescriptions. For the last few years I've been using 2-week disposable soft lenses. The two-week lenses are better than daily, but they still are a little too weak for me. I only wear them occasionally (mostly when I need to look more dancery)  and for my Friday night gig. Having two-week disposables you only wear for 4 days tops is a waste of money. I want to wear contacts more often and enjoy the sunglasses of summer.

Today I got off work early and went to the eye-doctor/contact place. Years ago I wouldn't have the vocabulary to say that  I want hard contacts, like I wore back in high school and college....yes, I'm sure! Heck, I avoided getting contacts in Japan for 3 years, saving that for trips back home.*

This time I had a lovely talk with a young lady in trying to figure out what sort of hard lenses I might want...because the phrase "I want hard, but I still want gas-permiable lenses" is a difficult one to translates. It would be easiest to just get more soft contacts...

"You know, hard but it lets the eye" (big breath in and out) "You know!"
"Breathe!"
"Yes. Gas in ok!"

I did reassure her that I knew the first few weeks would be traumatic and I'd slowly have to ramp up my use time as my eyelids get the right caluses. It was so painful the first time that I have vivid memories of over-estimating how long I could go one night and watching the second half of a drama at the Civic Center IN TERRIBLE PAIN!!!! but after that time passed I wore my contacts regularly for about 8 years.

And, hard lenses are pricy at first, but the cost evens out over time and aret only about 1/3 of what I'd pay for new frames and lenses. I am down to only one pair of glasses...Emma Beshta broke my second pair a few years ago when we were playing "You're a human sandwich and I'ma gonna eat you!" She put a couch pillow  (the bread)  over my face and jumped...the glue-fix held for a year later and was not noticable...but it gave up the ghost a couple months back.

The pain adventure starts Thursday or Saturday, depending what time I have to pick up my lenses.

*From an entry in 2004:
Having lived in Japan, you'll appreciate how I found my contact vendor. As you may or may not know, stores for glasses are everywhere but contact stores are more tucked away.

So I went to a location where I once saw a guy handing out tissue packs with fliers for a contact place. I found him again and went straight up to him for a flier. As most people avoid flier guys, this one knew I was serious. He made some small talk with me and walked me to the store.

(Then I learned my old prescript wouldn't work, I yelled fFuuuuccccckkkk! in an empty elevator, biked home for my insurance card..and take two went better)
